Do you ever look at a picture of your great grandparents and wonder,

“Who were you?”

 “How did life shape you?” 

“If I look hard enough, can I find me in you?”

 

The people who built Montana came here for a new start after the Civil War, to cowboy or herd sheep, in search of gold and silver, as mail order brides, orphans, sodbusters, lumberjacks, schoolteachers, fortune seekers – to get away.  All of them hoped there was something better than what they left behind, and they worked incredibly hard to make it better.

 

In Montana we have a culture of showing up with food in good times and bad, lending equipment and physical strength, waving at passing vehicles on the road, and dropping everything to help a neighbor.  All these lessons have been woven into the fabric of life and handed down by the pioneers who went before.

 

Unwittingly, we use the past to make sense of the present because the future is just too hard to wrap our arms around.  We have these grace-giving patterns of living and treasured things anchoring us.  Perhaps something like the Pioneer blanket on a favorite chair.  We consider it, hold it up – “So beautiful.  Grandma loved this.  She survived the unimaginable.  I can too.”
